What it is like to live here

Southrop is the quintessential Gloucestershire village set in the heart of the Cotswolds with its mellow honey toned homes sitting comfortably amidst an arable landscape alongside the River Leach, with its clear waters home to wild brown trout, swans, kingfishers and voles. This ancient village was mentioned in the Domesday Book and has a 12th Century Saxon Church, St Peter’s, with a fine Norman font. But this small rural enclave is not frozen in time but is home to a thriving community with a well-regarded successful primary school, known for its excellent staff to pupil ratio, a beautiful Manor House in whose grounds the annual fete is held and, of course, a village pub.

Here a more contemporary note is struck as The Swan at Southrop is not just any village pub but was crowned restaurant of the year 2010 by the Which? Good Food Guide? and provides destination dining alongside its place in the community as the village ‘local’. At the Manor House, traditional working buildings have been carefully restored to provide places for artisans and crafts people to work and now houses the highly regarded food school, Thyme at Southrop.

Beyond the village itself is the beautiful rolling countryside, providing ample opportunity for walking, cycling and riding. Golf is available at Faringdon and Cirencester and sailing and watersports close by at the Cotswold Waterpark. Theatre and cinema are in Swindon and Cheltenham, which itself if famous for its festivals of Racing, Literature and Cricket. Nearby the towns of Fairford, Burford, Lechlade and Faringdon provide shopping and everyday amenities, and within easy reach are Cirencester, Oxford, and Swindon where the M4 motorway provides a gateway to London and a choice of national and international airports.

All of which means that Southrop enjoys not only a perfect setting but offers a place where modern rural living is being embraced to provide an environment where old and new sit comfortably together – a village with a heart.

Close to the centre of the village, Hills Homes, the proud winners of the LABC Building Excellence Award 2010 for ‘Best Small Housing Development’ are creating Stonesfield Close, a collection of substantial individual properties. Using the finest traditional materials to ensure they sit seamlessly into the landscape, these impressive houses offer an opportunity to enjoy the best of both worlds – a home built to reflect modern tastes and lifestyles, with all the attendant technological and ecological advances, in a peaceful yet thriving rural setting.
